Efficient production and, above all, avoiding rejects: At Battery Manufacturing Day, we bring together everyone involved in the development and production chain for battery cells and modules.

Battery cells and battery modules are the most important components of all electrified vehicles. Manufacturing these components efficiently is all the more important because the raw materials required are expensive. Machine and plant manufacturers, factory equipment suppliers, providers of testing and measurement technology, (engineering) service providers, scientists, consultants and planners, car manufacturers and suppliers: the list of trades involved in design and production is long.

They all have to meet the requirements of flexibility, efficiency, quality and sustainability. How do they achieve this? Which tools help them to do so? What experience have they gained so far?

We will discuss this at the Battery Manufacturing Day on November 20 and 21 in Karlsruhe, Germany. Together with speakers and participants, we want to provide answers to the question: What opportunities do battery cell production and battery module manufacturing offer for German and European companies?

Focus topics of the event

The event will focus on the relevant process steps and workflows in the plants. Speakers will provide an overview with best-practice examples and insights into ongoing projects. These include:

• the production of battery cells and modules: Market overview, development and opportunities

• Best practice examples from car manufacturers and suppliers

• Plants and systems for efficient and flexible battery production

• Testing and quality assurance in battery production

• the networking and digitalization of battery production

• Less waste in battery production

• Car manufacturers' expectations of equipment manufacturers and suppliers

Practical examples and start-up pitch

Robert Buttenhauser, Head of Planning HV Battery/Drives, HV Battery Production at Audi, will begin the congress day with his keynote speech and an outlook on battery production at the car manufacturer.

He will be followed by Olaf Sauer, Deputy Director of the Automation and Digitalization Business Unit at Fraunhofer IOSB, and Florian Kößler, Head of the Agile Production Systems Group at the Institute of Production Engineering (wbk) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe/Germany. They will give an insight into their work in the Karlsruhe Research Factory as a development environment for battery technologies.

Stefan Maier, Managing Partner of Robot-Technology, will give a practical example of the handling of battery components. This includes processes, fire protection and packaging.

Other presentations include, for example, the end-to-end networking of processes and ecosystems for product development and the equipment for the "Battery Cell Assembly" and "Cell Formation" process steps.

In the start-up pitch, young companies in the field of battery cell and module production can present their approaches and ideas to an expert audience.

Tour of the research factory

On the day before, November 20, we will take a live look at practical research and real production processes at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. During a guided tour of the factory, participants will learn details about the production facilities and all aspects of battery cell research.

Afterwards, there will be time at a networking evening with participants, speakers and partners of the Battery Manufacturing Day to discuss open questions in person—or simply to hear informally what topics are currently on the agenda at other companies.
