Four companies are driving forward the standardization of automated conductive charging. The Matrix Charging Interest Group (MCIG) began its work on November 27. The founding members are the car manufacturers Audi, Nissan and Voyah as well as the Austrian company Easelink, which developed the Matrix Charging technology.

Vehicle manufacturers worldwide are already integrating Matrix Charging into the series development of upcoming platforms, according to the Group. In order to ensure interoperability between all vehicles and the automated charging infrastructure, standardization of the interface is urgently required.

According to its own information, the MCIG complements the ongoing standardization work of the ISO and IEC committees. Its aim is to accelerate formal standardization processes through industry-oriented coordination. This should allow all relevant interface parameters to be harmonized in parallel with series development.

FRAND Licenses to Enable Broad Market Launch

The Group grants licenses on FRAND terms (Fair, Reasonable, And Non-Discriminatory). This gives product developers access to essential patents. "By making our essential patents available on FRAND terms, we offer MCIG members maximum operational flexibility and planning security," says Hermann Stockinger, founder and Managing Director of Easelink, with conviction.

Menno Treffers will take over as Chairman of the MCIG. He was previously Chairman of the Wireless Power Consortium and Secretary General of the Zhaga Consortium. "MCIG follows the successful model of the special interest groups, such as those behind the development of Bluetooth and NFC," explains Treffers.

The Group invites other companies with a strategic interest in the development and market launch of Matrix Charging to participate in shaping the standard.
