At first it seemed as if Apple would not roll out its new AI functions on iPhones and iPads in the EU. But now "Apple Intelligence" is coming after all.

A central requirement of the DMA (Digital Markets Act) is that large platforms that have been declared "gatekeepers" must grant other providers access and may not give preference to their own offerings. At the same time, there is an exception if this could compromise the "integrity" of the services.

The cornerstone of Apple's vision for useful artificial intelligence is that the software gains in-depth access to user data on the devices. The iPhone company was particularly concerned that the European DMA requirements for opening up to other manufacturers and service providers could compromise the protection of user data. It has now said that in recent months it has been looking for a way to reconcile the DMA rules with user data protection and security. As Apple is not seen as a gatekeeper with much market power when it comes to Mac computers, the AI functions should be introduced there anyway.

The functions that are now to be added to the iPhone and iPad in the EU include writing tools that improve texts with the help of artificial intelligence, the integration of the ChatGPT chatbot, the redesigned Siri voice assistant and the option to create your own emoji symbols with voice presets. Apple did not specify a date for this. It merely stated that they would be introduced with later software updates. A large part of the "Apple Intelligence" functions were launched in the USA on Monday.
