Through AR visualizations like floating particles, the Augmented Reality app Deva (Dynamic Exposure Visualization App) from the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) displays pollutants such as CO2, NO2, or fine dust directly in the three-dimensional space around the users' position. The goal is to raise awareness about the local environmental conditions.

The basis is public data

In addition to displaying pollutants, Deva offers the ability to record routes and monitor air quality along the way. This data feeds into the Dynamic Exposure Visualization Dashboard (DEV-D), enabling comprehensive analyses. Deva uses publicly available air pollution data from sensor networks and web platforms to prepare complex environmental data in an easily understandable way. The app was developed as part of the European research project H2020 Compair, which created digital tools for better understanding of air quality with citizen involvement in four pilot cities.

The experts at Fraunhofer HHI have experience in developing solutions for real-time Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications with a focus on optimized end-user experience. According to the researchers, AR serves as a key technology to make data accessible to a broad audience and to influence both individual behavior and political decision-making processes.
