Air and Nidec have entered into a partnership and are jointly developing a motor for the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft Air One. The goal is to create a motor specifically for medium-sized eVTOLs.

The collaboration between Air and Nidec is intended to accelerate the series launch of eVTOL aircraft, thereby giving a boost to the Advanced-Air-Mobility industry (AAM). eVTOLs are considered the most important application development of AAM, especially in urban areas.

Motor as the centerpiece

Both companies intend to work on an efficient motor tailored to Air One. The two-seater eVTOL can complete flights of up to 161 km (100 miles) on a single charge. The development of the new motor is funded by the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial R&D Foundation (BIRD) as part of their BIRD-Energy program. The final result is initially to be integrated into further flight tests of Air One and then, in all likelihood, manufactured by Air. "The motor is the heart of every vehicle and aircraft," emphasizes Rani Plaut, CEO and co-founder of Air, adding: "This partnership represents not only a significant turning point for the AAM industry as a whole but also specifically paves the way for fulfilling the mission of Air and the dream of personal flight."

More than 1,000 pre-orders

The partnership is the latest milestone for the start-up, which last month announced its participation in the AFWERX Agility Prime program of the U.S. Air Force to promote flight testing and further eVTOL research efforts in the USA. Previous full-scale and full-weight flight tests, including transitions from hover to cruise and from cruise back to hover, demonstrate the potential of Air One. With over 1,000 pre-orders plus a waiting list, there is lively interest in the eVTOL. The company plans to deliver the first batch after certification.
