On July 2nd, it's that time again: FPGA Conference Europe opens its doors for three days. Europe's largest international professional conference for programmable logic and adaptive computing brings together the who's who of the industry. The event, developed by ELEKTRONIKPRAXIS and the experienced training professionals of PLC2 - FPGA market leader AMD has just crowned PLC2 as the world's best authorized training partner (ATP) - covers current developments and solutions in the field of FPGA technology across all manufacturers. The focus is on practice-oriented presentations and tutorials, and thus knowledge that can be quickly integrated into your own development routine.
In many areas - from edge AI applications with tight energy budgets to industrial controls, vehicle electronics, measurement technology, telecommunications, high-performance data centers of hyper-scalers, to extremely demanding air and space applications - field programmable gate arrays prove to be flexible and powerful accelerator solutions.
Given the high rate of evolution of FPGA technology, it is not easy to stay up to date. Developers of embedded systems must engage with new solutions and approaches, but at the same time they must also answer fundamental questions: Are FPGAs suitable for their own projects? How to best use FPGAs? How can programmable logic improve the performance and security of embedded systems? How can the full potential of multi-processor SoC FPGAs be exploited?
From the basics to the AI special solution: 6 parallel tracks for the first time
The answers can be found in the broad program of our three-day FPGA Conference Europe. The presentations and tutorials are divided into 10 focus tracks: AI/ML, Application, Architecture, Basics, Board Design & Connectivity, Embedded, Tools & Methodologies, Language/Debug/Verification, Safety & Security, and Tutorials. Each day, 6 tracks take place in parallel, with the tutorial track running continuously.
Whether you're just getting to know the world of FPGAs or you're already an old hand, FPGA Conference Europe offers the right connection for every level of knowledge. Feel free to take a look at the event's homepage - surely there are interesting presentations for you too. Here you can put together a program tailored to your needs from nearly 200 presentations and tutorials by top-notch international speakers and PLC2 training professionals. A complete overview, which you can download as a PDF document, helps with the selection.
Exciting keynotes
For the first keynote, the event committee managed to secure Michael Hutchinson from FPGA market leader AMD. In his lecture "From FPGAs to Heterogeneous Adaptive SoCs — And the Evolving Developer Experience," the Senior Director of Customer Experience Engineering, Software and Solutions, discusses how the evolution of FPGA architectures changes the way we think about system designs.
With ever-increasing logic densities and the heterogeneous integration of computing units, the associated tool flows, IP, and software stacks must evolve as quickly as the silicon. Hutchinson explains how FPGAs evolved into adaptive SoCs, how programmable logic merges with Arm subsystems and vector processors - and how AMD is leading this change with its next-generation adaptive Versal SoCs and AI engines. He also demonstrates how the AMD Vivado and Vitis tools, together with a comprehensive IP library and a Linux stack, enable team-based design for FPGA developers, embedded software developers, DSP engineers, and AI developers.
RISC-V integration in FPGAs
High-profile speakers continue on the second day with the keynote from Ted Speers, Head of Product Architecture and Planning, Technical Fellow at Microchip Technology. His topic "Intelligent edge - empowering innovation by making open-source RISC-V development hardware affordable and accessible" addresses the trend of decisions in industrial designs being made increasingly at the device level, creating a demand for intelligent edge devices. These edge AI devices require flexibility - and are therefore typical applications for FPGA-based solutions. These applications often need to combine the functions of a comprehensive operating system with the real-time behavior of a real-time operating system and the split-second timings of FPGAs.
The biggest obstacle for these designs, however, is the lack of experienced FPGA engineers. How can companies overcome this shortage, how can individuals grow into this area of expertise? How can the pool of available software engineers be trained to work in this area? Microchip has pioneered in this area: As the first FPGA provider, the US company has implemented a hardened RISC-V processing system on a FPGA. The idea that technology should be accessible to everyone is also an important issue for Microchip as a company.
